Description:
In the Medieval Ages the ancient Sosmano establishment was
an important castle. It belonged to the noble Colas Iacobelli.
In 1524, Sosmano was seriously damaged by the Guelph Army,
formed by Orvieto, Perugia, Spoleto, Narni and Florence against
the Ghibellines of Todi. Sosmano remained without any line
of defence for about a hundred years. Until 1383 it was controlled
by the town council of Todi; later it became the stronghold
of Atti Family. Sismano was then under the power of the Anguillara
Family, and from that period started the continuous fighting
between the Atti and the Chiaravalle Families for power interests.
In 1607 Bartolomeo Corsini bought the castle and in 1730,
the period in which Lorenzo Corsini raised to the Papal State
as Clemente XII, the feud raised to the princedom. The Corsini
Family, native of Castelvecchio in Poggibonsi, gave to the
Church a Pope, three Cardinals and four Bishops. Some of them
were ambassadors, ministers, imperial-councillors, general
captains of Papal troops and senators; in 1816 it belonged
to the Prince Tommaso Corsini. The castle of Sismano lies
on the hilltop (433 metres above sea-level) on the provincial
way linking Avigliano Umbro and Todi.
At 2 km there is the “Foresta Fossile” of Dunarobba. It is
a forest of fossil wood, patrimony of this country of great
geological interest and uniqueness. It is composed of forty-five
stumps dated back to the sequoias family, generally extinct
but intact here thanks to the conservative action of the clay.
Near the characteristic medieval village of Sismano, driving
for a Km of dirty road between green hills in a suggestive
position "Umbria for You" presents a independent
farmhouse "PIANA SECONDA" divided in three apartments:
"DI CELSO", "GLI ARCHI" and "BLU"
This typical stone farmhouse is located inside 800 hectares
land belonging to Corsini's family since 1600.
